Water bottle hygiene and pump cleaning: a step-by-step guide

The water inside a 19-litre bottle is sealed and hygienic the moment it leaves the bottling plant. But before it reaches your glass, it passes through several contact points: the pump, the dispenser and the neck of the bottle itself. A few simple hygiene rules at home and in the office will keep the water as fresh in the last glass as in the first.

When the bottle is delivered

Hygiene starts at your door. Things to check:

  • Cap and safety seal: The protective band or film on the cap must be intact. If it is opened, torn or loose, do not accept the bottle.
  • Body: There should be no cracks, deep scratches or leaks.
  • Appearance: The water should be clear, with no particles, cloudiness or change of colour.
  • Filling and best-before dates: Check the dates on the label.

Where should you store the bottle?

Water is sensitive to light and heat, and storage conditions matter even more in Cyprus's sunny climate.

  1. Keep it out of direct sunlight. Balconies, terraces and window sills are not suitable. Sunlight can encourage algae growth and heat the plastic.
  2. Choose a cool, dry place. A shaded indoor spot away from heat sources is ideal.
  3. Keep it away from strong odours. Do not store it next to detergents, paint, fuel or pesticides; plastic can absorb smells over time.
  4. Do not place it directly on the floor. Use a stand or pallet where possible.
  5. Finish an opened bottle within a reasonable time. The general recommendation is to use an opened bottle within about 7–10 days.

Before fitting the bottle

Before placing the bottle on a dispenser or pump, wipe the neck with a clean cloth. Wash your hands, and once you have removed the seal, avoid touching the opening.

Cleaning the pump, step by step

Manual and rechargeable pumps are the parts the water flows directly through. A quick clean at every bottle change and a thorough clean once a month are recommended.

  1. Remove the pump from the bottle and, for rechargeable models, unplug the charging cable.
  2. Take out the hose and suction tube. On most pumps these come off easily by hand.
  3. Rinse with lukewarm water. Wash the parts under running lukewarm water.
  4. Soak in a mild vinegar solution. Soak the hose and tube for 10–15 minutes in one litre of water mixed with one tablespoon of white vinegar. Alternatively, use a food-safe disinfectant and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  5. Rinse thoroughly. Rinse until there is no smell of vinegar or disinfectant left.
  6. Let the parts dry and reassemble. Never submerge the electronic body; just wipe it with a damp cloth.

Cups and surroundings

  • In offices, use disposable paper cups or personal cups.
  • Do not press cups or bottles against the dispenser tap or pump spout.
  • Empty and wash the drip tray at least once a week.

Common mistakes

Hygiene is usually undermined by small habits rather than big failures. The mistakes we see most often are:

  • Leaving the bottle outdoors: A bottle left on the doorstep or balcony for hours after delivery warms up in the sun.
  • Fitting it without wiping the neck: Dust can collect on the neck during transport; wiping it takes only a few seconds.
  • Never taking the pump apart: The hose and tube may look clean outside, but residue can build up inside.
  • Using a half-empty bottle for weeks: Smaller households may be better served by smaller pack sizes.

Returning and reusing bottles

Keep empty bottles with their caps in a clean, dry place. Never fill them with any other liquid. Although returned bottles go through a multi-stage washing and disinfection process at our plant, this simple rule makes the process easier for everyone. You can hand your empty bottle to our driver at your next delivery.

Regular replacement is the easiest form of hygiene. With a scheduled delivery subscription, a fresh bottle arrives before the old one runs out; for one-off needs, you can place an online order.
