Staying hydrated in the North Cyprus summer

Summers in North Cyprus are long, sunny and hot. In July and August, daytime temperatures often climb above 35 °C, and days above 40 °C are not unusual in Nicosia and on the Mesaoria plain. On the Kyrenia coast the sea breeze may feel cooling, but humidity makes it harder to notice how much fluid you lose through sweat. In this article we share practical advice on how to support your body through the hot months.

What happens to the body in the heat?

The body sweats to regulate its temperature. As sweat evaporates we cool down, but in the process we lose both water and minerals such as sodium and potassium (electrolytes). When fluids are not adequately replaced, you may notice:

  • A dry mouth and strong thirst,
  • Headache, tiredness and poor concentration,
  • Dark urine in small amounts,
  • Dizziness and muscle cramps.

Confusion, a very high temperature, stopping sweating or fainting can be signs of heatstroke and require urgent medical help.

Daily routine tips for summer

  1. Start the day with water. Drink a glass or two when you wake up.
  2. Do not wait until you are thirsty. Sip regularly throughout the day.
  3. Always have water with you. Keep a bottle in the car, in your bag and on your desk. But do not leave water in the sun or in a closed car for hours.
  4. Avoid the hottest hours. Where possible, limit outdoor activity between 11:00 and 16:00.
  5. Eat more water-rich foods. Watermelon, melon, cucumber, tomatoes and yoghurt are natural parts of the Cypriot summer table.
  6. Balance caffeine and alcohol. If you drink them, make sure you drink water too.

At the beach and in the sea

Because the sea feels refreshing, thirst fades, which is why water intake is often overlooked on beach days.

  • Pack at least one large bottle of water per person in your beach bag.
  • Take a few sips at every break from swimming.
  • Rest in the shade and wear a hat.
  • Check regularly that children are drinking.

Extra care for children and older adults

Children can forget to drink when they are busy playing. Colourful bottles, letting them carry their own and scheduled "water breaks" help build the habit.

Older adults may feel less thirsty. Offering water at regular intervals, keeping rooms cool and choosing light clothing are important. Because people with chronic conditions or on regular medication may have different fluid needs, they should always consult a doctor about their individual requirements.

Electrolytes: when are they needed?

For a healthy adult with a balanced diet, water and the minerals from meals are usually enough in everyday life. During prolonged intense exercise, hours of work in the heat or heavy sweating, replacing lost electrolytes may become relevant. We recommend asking a health professional before turning to ready-made products.

Hot days at work

People working outdoors, on building sites, in warehouses or in kitchens are among the most exposed in summer. Keep drinking water available close to the work area, plan short regular water breaks, move heavy tasks to early morning or late afternoon where possible and encourage colleagues to look out for one another.

Store water correctly in the heat

  • Do not leave bottles exposed to the sun on a balcony or terrace.
  • Do not leave PET bottles in the car; warm plastic can affect the taste of the water.
  • Choose a cool, shaded spot away from strong odours.

Be ready for summer

Household water consumption rises noticeably in summer. You can check your own needs with our water calculator and set up a scheduled delivery subscription so a new bottle arrives before the old one runs out. In central Kyrenia and nearby areas, orders placed before the cut-off time are delivered the same day; visit our order page for details.
